

Bezos Centre unveils Sustainable Food Accelerator to fast-track foodtech startups from lab to market
A new accelerator backed by some of the world's largest food companies has been launched to help sustainable food startups overcome one of the biggest barriers facing the sector: turning promising laboratory research into commercially viable businesses.
• The Bezos Centre for Sustainable Protein and Undaunted at Imperial College London launched the Sustainable Food Accelerator, a 12-month, equity-free program to help food technology startups reach commercial readiness.
• Selected ventures can receive up to £100,000 (US$135,000) in funding, access pilot opportunities with Cargill, Danone, Kerry and Mars, and compete for follow-on investment of up to £2 million (US$2.7 million).
• The accelerator combines corporate-defined industry challenges, research infrastructure, technical validation, regulatory support and investor networks to help startups bridge the gap between laboratory innovation and commercial scale.
The Sustainable Food Accelerator, launched by the Bezos Centre for Sustainable Protein and Undaunted at Imperial College London, is a 12-month, equity-free program designed to bridge the gap between scientific innovation and market adoption. Developed in partnership with the UKRI Microbial Food Hub, it will connect early-stage ventures with corporate partners, investors and scale-up infrastructure to help them generate the technical and commercial evidence needed to secure pilot projects and attract funding.
The initiative brings together corporate partners Cargill, Danone, Kerry and Mars, which will define real-world commercial challenges for participating companies. Rather than simply mentoring startups, the companies will help identify the data and performance milestones needed to progress towards pilot projects and have committed pilot budgets for ventures that successfully meet those objectives.
Successful applicants will also be eligible for up to £100,000 (US$135,000) in equity-free funding, while venture capital partners Oyster Bay VC and FoodLabs could provide follow-on investment of up to £2 million (US$2.7 million). The program is further supported by investors and innovation partners including Synthesis Capital, Beyond Impact, Big Idea Ventures, SOSV, Clay Capital, Döhler Ventures, Newland Ventures, biotope by VIB and The Mills Fabrica.
The accelerator has been created in response to what its organizers describe as a persistent commercialization bottleneck across sustainable food innovation. While startups continue to develop novel ingredients, production technologies and manufacturing processes, many struggle to generate the pilot-scale data, regulatory certainty, product validation and commercial proof required before corporates will commit to pilot programs or investors will fund expansion.
According to the organizers, the result is a familiar cycle in which promising science stalls before reaching the market. Corporates need evidence before launching pilot projects, investors require validation before backing scale-up, and founders often lack access to the facilities, expertise and industry partners needed to generate that evidence.
The Sustainable Food Accelerator has been structured to address those challenges from the outset by aligning participating ventures with industry demand rather than asking founders to develop technologies in isolation. Corporate partners will define the commercial problems they are seeking to solve, enabling startups to develop products and processes against clearly identified market needs.
The first cohort will focus on companies developing technologies capable of improving production economics, enhancing ingredient functionality, creating high-value ingredients from side streams and low-carbon feedstocks, and reducing the technical risks associated with scaling production from laboratory to industrial manufacturing.
Alongside funding and industry engagement, selected startups will receive technical validation, regulatory guidance, grant writing support and investor readiness training. Participants will also gain access to an extensive research and development network spanning Imperial College London, University College London, the University of Cambridge, Aberystwyth University, AberInnovation, the Quadram Institute, the University of Reading and the University of Greenwich, together with additional scale-up partners across the UK and Europe.
The facilities cover the full development pathway, from early-stage discovery and strain engineering through bioprocessing, pilot-scale production and downstream processing to analytical characterization, food application, sensory evaluation and commercial validation.
Participating ventures will be based within London's White City Innovation District, where they will work alongside researchers, corporate partners and investors throughout the 12-month program. The organizers say the environment has been designed to encourage collaboration while giving founders direct access to expertise and infrastructure that would otherwise be difficult to obtain.
The accelerator builds on the work of the Bezos Centre for Sustainable Protein and the UKRI Microbial Food Hub at Imperial College London, both of which support research into technologies intended to improve the sustainability, accessibility and health outcomes of future food systems. Supported by the Bezos Earth Fund and UK Research and Innovation, the organizations aim to accelerate the development of commercially relevant food technologies through research and industry collaboration.
Professor Rodrigo Ledesma Amaro, Director of the Bezos Centre for Sustainable Protein at Imperial College London, said many of the technologies needed to transform food production already exist but struggle to progress beyond the research stage.

The accelerator is being delivered with Undaunted, Imperial's climate innovation partnership, which has supported clean technology startups since 2012. According to the organization, companies graduating from its accelerator programs have raised more than US$1.3 billion in investment, created more than 1,600 jobs across 30 countries and achieved an 88% survival rate, compared with an industry average of 10%.
