Nutrition from Water secures Japan and Europe launch partners for Marine Whey
Nutrition from Water (NXW), a company focused on producing sustainable nutrition from aquatic sources, has signed two Joint Development Agreements (JDAs) to accelerate the global launch of its flagship product, Marine Whey. The agreements mark an important step in the company’s plans to bring its novel protein ingredient to market, with initial focus on Japan and Europe.
The first partnership is with Nissei Kyokei, a leading Japanese importer and distributor of nutrition and dairy ingredients. With longstanding experience trading New Zealand dairy proteins, including products from Fonterra, Nissei Kyokei will support the expansion of Marine Whey into the Japanese market through strategic collaborations with food, dairy, and nutrition companies.
“Marine Whey presents a truly exciting opportunity for the Japanese market,” commented Kazuo Kumagai, President of Nissei Kyokei. “We are confident that Marine Whey will not only meet the growing demand for sustainable protein alternatives but also be a natural fit for Japanese consumers for whom ocean organics have been a part of their diets for centuries.”
The second agreement is with a European dairy nutrition company, further extending NXW’s international footprint. While the name of the partner has not been disclosed, the collaboration signals strong interest from the region’s mature nutrition market. NXW is now working to transition from demonstration-scale production to full commercial output.
“We are incredibly excited to be working with Nissei Kyokei to bring Marine Whey to the Japanese market,” added Federico Duarte, CEO of NXW. “These JDAs are a testament to the growing global recognition of the potential of Marine Whey. They are also an effective tool to work with our partners, world-class experts in their own markets, to build the Marine Whey category and accelerate demand generation.”
Marine Whey is positioned as a sustainable, ocean-derived protein ingredient designed to meet growing B2B demand for alternative sources of high-quality nutrition. As the company ramps up production from kilograms to tonnes, it is preparing for broader market launches starting with Japan and Europe.
To support its growth, NXW has established global headquarters in Portugal. The location offers access to advanced microalgae laboratories and commercial infrastructure capable of producing up to 100 metric tons per year of specialized Marine Whey ingredients.
According to NXW, its biotechnology platform allows the production of nutrient-rich protein ingredients using marine resources, offering an alternative to conventional protein sources at a time when demand for sustainable food solutions continues to rise.
With more partnerships expected to follow, NXW is positioning Marine Whey as a next-generation ingredient that can support a wide range of nutrition applications in both existing and emerging markets.
