Plant Based Foods Association unveils ambitious 2025-2027 Strategic Plan

March 4, 2025

The Plant Based Foods Association (PBFA) and its sister organization, the Plant Based Foods Institute (PBFI), have launched a comprehensive three-year strategic plan to accelerate the expansion of the plant-based foods industry while transforming food systems for sustainability and equity. With a vision that aligns economic opportunity with planetary health, the plan outlines bold initiatives to strengthen market competitiveness, increase US production and consumption of plant-based foods, and engage key stakeholders from policymakers to consumers.

At the heart of PBFA’s approach is a commitment to growing the plant-based food industry to a critical tipping point by increasing retail and foodservice market share, expanding certification programs, and ensuring a fair regulatory landscape. The organization aims to boost plant-based product availability through partnerships with retailers, foodservice operators, and manufacturers while also advocating for policies that protect fair market competition. A key focus will be securing plant-based foods’ place in federal nutrition programs and public procurement, ensuring greater accessibility in schools, hospitals, and government institutions.

“The urgent need to shift our food system is clear,” PBFA CEO Rachel Dreskin stated. “Plant-based foods offer an immediate, practical, and impactful solution to some of today’s biggest challenges, from climate change to public health and food equity. Our 2025-2027 Strategic Plan is a call to action for industry leaders, policymakers, and consumers to join us in building a thriving, sustainable food future.”

PBFI’s role will be to reshape agricultural supply chains by supporting farmers in transitioning to diversified, plant-based crop production. The institute will work to integrate plant-based food production into federal and state agricultural programs, advocate for increased research and funding for alternative crops, and support manufacturers in sourcing sustainable ingredients. The plan also emphasizes engaging with global stakeholders to enhance the U.S. plant-based sector’s competitive standing in international markets.

PBFA and PBFI’s strategy also places a strong emphasis on consumer engagement, leveraging marketing campaigns and research initiatives to increase plant-based food adoption. With a goal to expand PBFA’s industry representation by 150% by 2027, the association will provide best-in-class membership resources, policy advocacy, and marketplace opportunities.

As plant-based foods continue to gain traction, PBFA and PBFI’s strategic initiatives aim to create a resilient and inclusive industry that benefits people, animals, and the planet. “This is a pivotal moment,” Dreskin emphasized. “Together, we can drive meaningful change, ensuring that plant-based foods are at the forefront of a healthier, more sustainable food system.”
