Schouten Europe unveils globally inspired plant-based burgers

June 3, 2025

Schouten Europe is broadening its plant-based portfolio with the launch of its new Taste of the World Burgers, a trio of globally inspired products that mark a shift in the company’s approach to meat alternatives.

Announced today from its base in Giessen, the Dutch company introduced three new burger varieties: Mexican, Italian, and Thai. The range focuses on distinct culinary flavor profiles rather than replicating meat, a move the company describes as a response to evolving consumer preferences.

The Mexican burger variety

“Consumers are increasingly looking for plant-based products that stand on their own,” commented Mark van Noorloos, Marketing Manager at Schouten Europe. “By moving away from direct comparisons with meat, we’re able to deliver unique flavors and textures that appeal to a variety of culinary preferences.”

Each burger in the range weighs approximately 90g (3.2oz ) and is based on natural ingredients such as legumes and vegetables. They feature a crispy exterior and a soft interior, with the company highlighting their rich vegetable content and versatile flavor appeal.

The Mexican Burger includes chili and cumin, the Italian version offers Mediterranean herbs and sun-dried tomato, and the Thai Burger incorporates flavors like lemongrass and ginger. While the press release does not detail the exact ingredient breakdown, it emphasizes that none of the new products are designed to mimic the taste or texture of meat. Instead, Schouten positions them as standalone culinary experiences.

The launch follows a similar trajectory set earlier this year with Schouten’s Power Bites and Sea Bites, both of which also prioritize unique identity over imitation. The new Taste of the World line continues this product philosophy, aimed at diversifying plant-based options beyond traditional meat analogues.

“People are genuinely motivated to eat less meat, but they still want products they enjoy,” Van Noorloos added. “By focusing on popular flavors with this concept, we expect consumers will appreciate these products.”

The burgers are now available to Schouten’s domestic and international customers. They can be purchased individually, allowing for sampling or mixing between varieties.

Headquartered in the southern Dutch province of Brabant, Schouten Europe has been a long-time presence in the plant-based sector, with a track record of developing meat and fish substitutes for both private-label and branded offerings. The company has increasingly leaned into products that emphasize vegetable-forward formulations and international taste profiles.

The Taste of the World Burgers launch comes amid continued interest in plant-based foods that do not rely on meat imitation. While the alt protein sector has faced some cooling in consumer enthusiasm for traditional meat substitutes, there is growing appetite for products that use whole food ingredients and offer bold, distinct flavors in their own right.

Van Noorloos and the company’s R&D team, shown in promotional materials working together in Schouten’s development kitchen, appear confident the new range will resonate with consumers looking for both taste and simplicity. As Schouten expands distribution across existing and new markets, the focus remains on delivering plant-based meals that don’t just substitute but satisfy on their own terms.

Taste of the World Burgers are available starting this week through Schouten’s commercial channels. Pricing and specific retail partners have not been disclosed.
