Thijs Bosch named new CEO of The Protein Brewery as Sue Garfitt steps down

May 20, 2025

The Protein Brewery has announced a change in executive leadership as it prepares for the next stage of its commercial development. Sue Garfitt, who has served as CEO since the company’s early scale-up phase, will step down from the role and be succeeded by Thijs Bosch, an industry veteran with more than 15 years’ experience in plant-based and B2B food ingredients markets.

Under Garfitt’s leadership, The Protein Brewery has achieved several strategic milestones. The company’s first product sale in the USA, regulatory approval for its flagship ingredient Fermotein in Singapore, and the completion and commissioning of its Mijkenbroek production facility have laid the groundwork for commercial expansion. Garfitt also led the team through its Series B fundraising round, which is now nearing completion.

“I’ve had the privilege of leading The Protein Brewery through its first stage of scale-up,” said Garfitt. “With the fundraising round nearing completion and the team ready for the next leap, this is a natural moment for me to begin a new chapter in my professional life, pursuing a non-executive career and handing the reins of The Protein Brewery to a new CEO.”

Bosch joins The Protein Brewery from Cosun, where he was instrumental in developing and scaling its plant protein business. Prior to that, he held senior positions at dairy co-operative Fonterra, including as Managing Director for Europe. His appointment comes as The Protein Brewery shifts its focus from foundation building to accelerating scale and securing new partnerships.

“I am honored to join The Protein Brewery at this pivotal stage,” said Bosch. “Sue and the team have built a strong platform with the potential to transform our food system. I look forward to building on that foundation and unlocking our next chapter of growth.”

The appointment was welcomed by Bente Korsgaard Andersen, Chairperson of The Protein Brewery. “We are excited to welcome Thijs Bosch as our new CEO,” Andersen said. “Thijs brings over 15 years of leadership experience in the B2B food ingredients and protein markets, with a proven track record in scaling new businesses and developing plant-based innovations.”

The transition also signals continued support from the company’s investors. Thomas Grotkjær, Lead Investor, described the leadership change as a natural evolution for the business. “Sue has laid an exceptional foundation, and we’re grateful for her leadership and dedication to ensure a smooth transition,” he said. “Thijs’ appointment marks the acceleration of the next phase – one focused on adding scale and developing more partnerships.”

Garfitt’s departure follows a transformative period for the company, during which it moved from early-stage development to active market engagement. Her decision to step down aligns with a personal shift toward a non-executive career, while ensuring that the company is positioned to continue building momentum under new leadership.

On behalf of the company, The Protein Brewery extended its gratitude to Garfitt for her commitment and vision, and welcomed Bosch as it enters a new chapter of commercial and operational growth.
