UMass Amherst launches US$120 million food innovation initiative with new research hub

September 21, 2026

UMass Amherst has launched a US$120 million Future of Food Initiative that will establish a new food innovation hub and research center spanning food processing, biomanufacturing, novel proteins, nutrition and sustainable production.

• UMass Amherst is investing US$120 million in a Future of Food Initiative bringing together research across food science, agriculture, engineering, nutrition and biomanufacturing.
• A new 36,000 ft² Food Innovation Hub will include a food-grade pilot plant, sensory testing laboratories, innovation kitchens and facilities for sustainable process development.
• Research will cover areas including novel protein sources, advanced manufacturing, AI and robotics, precision nutrition, food safety, sustainable production and food processing.

The initiative is being financed through four US$30 million contributions, including funding from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and UMass Amherst, alongside a US$30 million gift from Paul and Diane Manning through their family foundation. A further US$30 million will be raised by the UMass Amherst Foundation.

At the center of the investment will be the 36,000 ft² Paul and Diane Manning Food Innovation Hub, scheduled to break ground on the university’s Amherst campus in late 2027.

Attached to Chenoweth Laboratory, the facility will expand the university’s capacity for food research, product development and sustainable process development. Plans include a food-grade pilot plant, sensory testing laboratories, innovation kitchens, a clinical testing laboratory, demonstration kitchen and collaborative research spaces.

The hub will also support consumer research, food entrepreneur training and workshops, providing infrastructure intended to help move research toward practical applications and commercialization.

“Food touches everyone, and there are enormous opportunities to improve how we produce it, make it safer and healthier, and better understand the connection between food and human health,” said Paul Manning, Chair and CEO of PBM Capital. “UMass has the talent and expertise to tackle these challenges and, more importantly, turn great ideas into solutions that can have real impact. We’re excited to help give them the resources to think big, move faster and make a difference.”

Alongside the new facility, UMass Amherst will establish five permanent endowments, including a chair in Food Science, interdisciplinary professorships and a catalyst fund supporting future research and innovation.

The university is also creating a Center for the Future of Food, led initially by Peter Reinhart, Director of the Institute of Applied Life Sciences.

The center will bring together researchers from food science, agricultural sciences, nutrition and other university departments with external partners and the translational research infrastructure already available through the institute.

Its remit will range from food chemistry, processing and safety to health and wellness, new food types, soil cultivation, clean water, crop production and food security.

Novel protein sources are among the technologies identified by UMass Amherst as likely to influence the food system over the coming decade, alongside AI and robotics, precision nutrition, advanced chemistry, packaging, biomanufacturing and advanced manufacturing.

Engineering expertise will also form part of the program, including work in biomanufacturing and precision food processing, advanced sensors and biomaterials for food safety, waste valorization and the use of artificial intelligence to optimize food production and distribution.

“Through this historic investment, UMass Amherst is creating a national model for interdisciplinary collaboration that will drive innovation across the entire food ecosystem,” said Reinhart. “Our goal is not only to generate new knowledge, but to transform that knowledge into technologies, products and practices that improve lives and strengthen food systems around the world.”

UMass Amherst said the initiative would also respond to growing interest in AI and robotics-enabled food production, personalized nutrition and food-as-medicine approaches.

The university is drawing on a substantial existing food and agriculture research base. Its activities include food science and agricultural research on the Amherst campus as well as the Cranberry Station in East Wareham and Gloucester Marine Station, which works across ocean conservation, sustainable seafood and coastal resilience.

The project also has a regional economic development component. Massachusetts accounts for approximately 45% of New England’s food-system employment and sales, according to figures cited by the university, while food science, non-pharmaceutical biomanufacturing and the wider food ecosystem have been identified as an economic development opportunity for the Pioneer Valley region.

UMass Amherst Chancellor Javier A. Reyes said the investment would support research, student training and external partnerships across several areas of food production.

“UMass is committed to supporting cutting-edge research, providing hands-on student training and fostering external partnerships to drive transformative solutions that strengthen climate-resilient agriculture, expand food equity and production, and create a healthier, more sustainable future of food for all,” he said.
