Amai Proteins’ sweelin approved in Singapore as precision fermentation sweet protein

May 26, 2026

Amai Proteins has secured approval from the Singapore Food Agency for sweelin, its flagship sweet protein, for use as a sweetening agent in food and beverage products.

The approval covered sweelin’s use as a sweetening agent in food and beverage products in Singapore.
Amai Proteins described sweelin as the first precision fermentation-derived sweet protein approved in Singapore.
The milestone followed sweelin’s FDA GRAS status in the USA in February 2026.

The Rehovot, Israel-based company announced the approval on May 25, describing it as a major regulatory milestone and a step toward wider commercialization in Asia-Pacific.

sweelin is a monellin-based sweet protein inspired by the serendipity berry and produced through precision fermentation. According to Amai Proteins, the ingredient is on average 3,000 times sweeter than sugar by weight and has been designed to support sugar reduction while maintaining taste, cost efficiency, formulation performance, and sustainability.

The company reported that sweelin can be used across food and beverage products, confectionery, chewing gum, condiments, and dietary supplements. Amai Proteins also stated that the ingredient can enable up to 70% sugar reduction without compromising taste, cost, or sustainability.

The Singapore approval followed FDA GRAS status in the USA, granted in February 2026 for use as a general sweetener. Amai Proteins also highlighted the completion of what it described as the world’s first clinical study on a sweet protein, which found that sweelin did not affect blood glucose, insulin, or GLP-1 levels.

In the USA, the ingredient can be labeled as “Serendipity Berry Sweet Protein,” which Amai Proteins said supported clean-label and GLP-1-friendly product claims.

“Receiving regulatory approval for sweelin in Singapore is a defining milestone for Amai Proteins,” said Amir Guttman, CEO of Amai Proteins. “Singapore continues to demonstrate global leadership in food innovation through its forward-looking regulatory framework. We are honored that sweelin is the first precision fermentation-derived sweet protein approved in this ecosystem. This approval validates our regulatory strategy and creates exciting opportunities for commercialization throughout Singapore and the Asia-Pacific region.”

Amai Proteins confirmed it was engaging with strategic partners and investors across APAC to support commercial rollout and scale-up following the approval.
