Lantmännen joins research effort on plant-based proteins – partners with universities and industry to enhance health and well-being

September 27, 2024

Lantmännen is actively participating in PAN Sweden, a research center focused on plant-based proteins, which has recently secured additional funding from Formas, extending the project through 2028. This follows Lantmännen’s recent investment of SEK 1.2 billion in a state-of-the-art facility in Lidköping, set to become the largest of its kind for plant-based protein production.

PAN Sweden, led by Örebro University, brings together expertise from various disciplines to explore how plant-based proteins can be developed into nutritious, flavorful products with positive impacts on gut health, metabolism, and mental well-being. Consumer behavior is also a key area of study, with the overarching goal of positioning Sweden as a leader in sustainable food innovation.

“Strong involvement from both businesses and the public sector is essential for a successful shift toward healthier, more sustainable consumption patterns. Lantmännen brings its expertise in plant-based proteins and dietary fibers, with a focus on how these elements can deliver both health and taste benefits. With the additional SEK 40 million from Formas, we can continue our impactful collaboration, emphasizing the importance of both health and sustainability," commented Robert Brummer, professor and coordinator of the PAN Sweden consortium.

The new funding from Formas allows PAN Sweden to continue its work for another four years, driving forward research and development in this critical area.

“We are eager to further strengthen our collaboration with academia, industry, and interest groups on this important issue. Lantmännen has ambitious plans for plant-based proteins, as evidenced by our R&D efforts, facilities in Lidköping, Norrköping, and Kimstad, and our partnerships like PAN Sweden. Our focus is on creating food products that contribute to a more sustainable and healthier diet, ultimately enhancing overall well-being," said Lars-Gunnar Edh, Executive Vice President of Lantmännen’s Energy Sector.

Beyond PAN Sweden, Lantmännen is a key partner in several significant research initiatives, such as SLU Grogrund in Sweden and GreenPlantFood in Norway. The Lantmännen Research Foundation also supports various ongoing projects centered around green proteins, including those derived from wheat, oats, peas, and faba beans.
